Featured Project: Hitchens Farms Pond Rehabilitation Green Stone Engineering designed upgrades to an existing stormwater management pond in the residential subdivision of Hitchens Farms located in New Castle County. The existing pond outlet structure was constructed of corrugated metal pipe and was seriously corroded through the pond embankment. Additionally, the discharge location of the outlet barrel was severely eroded, and seepage through the embankment was compromising the integrity of the dam. The design consisted of removal of the existing outlet structure and replacement with a cast concrete inlet box and reinforced concrete outlet barrel. The embankment was redesigned to incorporate anti-seepage controls to include a compacted clay core and cut-off trench and anti-seep collars around the outlet barrel. A new turf reinforced emergency spillway was provided to prevent overtopping of the dam and to direct emergency flows away from the adjacent public road. Finally, a rip-rap stilling basin was designed for the outfall to reduce the velocity of stormwater discharges and provide a non-erosive conveyance off-site.
